The female "baby" was born in August 2013 at the Smithsonian National Zoo in Washington, D.C., and is the child of "Meixiang" and "Tiantian" in the United States. "Baby" will be placed in a special container provided by FedEx, and will return to China on the FedEx Panda Express 777 cargo plane specially decorated by FedEx.
Chen Jialiang, president of FedEx China, said: "FedEx has been entrusted with the task of transporting China's national treasure for the seventh time. We feel very honored and proud! With our huge global transportation network and strong operational strength, our team will surely deliver the 'baby' to Chengdu, China quickly and safely."
In addition to providing all necessary air transportation, FedEx also provided ground logistics support in Washington, including arranging special vehicles to transport from the Smithsonian National Zoo to the airport. The pilots, drivers and operators of FedEx in charge of this delivery mission are all team members with rich experience.
FedEx will work with the Smithsonian National Zoo and the Chinese organization to ensure that every work link in the transportation process is completed and provide a safe and comfortable journey for the "baby". At present, the Smithsonian National Zoo has been making various preparations, including making the "baby" adapt to stay in the special container during the journey. A keeper and a veterinarian from the Smithsonian National Zoo received special permission to travel with the "baby" on a special plane. The whole team will pay close attention to the status of "Baby" during the journey, and prepare enough drinking water, bamboo and her food, including apples, pears and sweet potatoes.
After the plane arrives in Chengdu, the "baby" will be transported to one of the bases managed by the China Conservation Research Center. A keeper of the Smithsonian National Zoo will follow and accompany the "baby" for a period of time to help her adapt to her new home.
